The HydrotexTM 6 inch thickness Filter Point (FP600) fabric formed concrete mattress by Synthetex is currently being installed to protect a textured geomembrane liner along a levee in a containment pond. This basin stores the residue resulting from a bauxite mining operation in Jamaica. The bauxite is then refined into alumina before it is exported. The alumina is exported to facilities where aluminium smelters are used to produce aluminium metal. The Hydrotex FP600 protective lining was selected in lieu of rip rap due to damage to the geomembrane liner which could result from rip rap placement. In addition, the cost to barge and truck rip rap and place to the site was avoided. And, no large equipment is needed, such as off-road haul dump trucks and backhoes, to place rip rap on the levee. So, in the end, performance, cost savings and ease of installation of the Hydrotex fabric formed concrete product over rip rap are the reasons FP600 was selected. This liner protection project is using approximately 300,000 ft2 (28,000 m2) of Hydrotex FP600 fabric formed concrete.
